and in young manhood bought the farm on which he now resides, which was at that time owned and occupied by his grandfather, Angus McCormack. 'He has given his main attention to this farm and has been fairly successful. He also owned several vessels and engaged in the fishing business. He has taken an intelligent interest in public affairs and in politics is a supporter of the Con- servative party. He has been a magistrate for over thirty years and for many years was wharfinger at Launching and a pilot out of Launching Bay.
~ Mr. McCormack married Miss Catherine ’ McPhee, of Big Pond, Lot 45, Prince Edward Island, a daughter of Joseph and Jane (McLean) McPhee, the latter a daugh- ter. of Capt. Charles McLean, of the British army. To Mr. and Mrs. McCormack were born the following children, namely: Joseph, of San Francisco; John, who is in the United States navy; Charles; Peter, of San Fran- cisco, California; James; Bennett, of New York City; Cenerus, of Brandon, Manitoba; Alexander, of Providence, Rhode Island; Daniel, who remains at home and is engaged in farming and fishing; Mary Ann, of Prov- idence, Rhode Island, and Sarah Jane, at home.
The subject’s paternal grandparents came from Uist, Invemess, Scotland. in 1772, and located first at French Fort. where they remained for ‘six years. The McLeans, who are of Scottish nativity, emigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1803 on the ship “Polly.” Angus McCormack was the father of the following children: Donald, the father of the subject; James; Michael; Joseph and John. Of these, Donald, the father of the subject, who was born in I799 and who died in 1874. at the age of seventy- five years, settled at DeGross Marsh, Lot

54, while the others remained at Launching. The subject had one brother, Gregory, who
was drowned in young manhood. Donald
McCormack married Miss Sarah Macdonald, a daughter of Donald Macdonald,of Launch- ing, who was one of the first six settlers at that place. the company including Angus McCormack, the subject’s grandfather, An- gus Walker, Mr. McPhee, Donald and Rod- erick McDonald and a Mr. McCormack, a relative of Angus. They all came originally from South Uist, Scotland, and bought six hundred acres of land at Launching in a joint grant and worked it in common, clear- ing and tilling the soil. In subsequent years the property was divided by mutual deeds of grant.
MRS. FLORA STEWART B. NORTON. widow of the late William Norton, of An- nandale, is a daughter of John and Agnes (Bell )Townshend. John Townshend was educated at Charlottetown and subsequently came to reside on his father’s estate in Lot 43, at Bay Fortune, Kings county, where he was extensively engaged in the building of vessels, subsequently selling his interests in the estate to Charles Warrell. John Town- shend married Miss Agnes Bell, a daughter of Thomas Bell, who came from Scotland. The paternal grandparents were Lord Robert and Flora (Stewart) Townshend, who are mentioned elsewhere in this volume. To him and his wife were born the following children: Mary, the wife of John Warrell. of Bay Fortune, and mother of Mrs. E. G. McKie, named elsewhere in this volume; Esther, the wife of John McNeill, a teacher: Flora Stewart, the subject of this sketch; Charles Rollo, late of Rollo Bay, and Helen. the wife of Charles Aitken. of Bay Fortune.
