6io PAST AND PRESENT OF the examination for a state license in Massa¬ chusetts, and then returned to Summerside and engaged in the active practice of his profession, remaining alone in the practice until 1905, when he formed a professional alliance with A. W. Leard , D. D. S., and they now conduct business under the firm name of Leard & McMurdo, enjoying a large and representative patronage. They are well informed in every detail of their profession and are held in the highest esteem in the community. Doctor McMurdo is a member of the Prince Edward Island Dental Association and the Maritime Dental Asso¬ ciation, while he also sustains fraternal rela¬ tions with the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Manuel Gallant , who owns.and op¬ erates the "Red Cliff " farm in Lot 15, Prince county, was born at Abram's Village, Lot 15, and is a son of Joseph C. and Mary (Porier) Gallant, the latter being a daugh¬ ter of John and Ellen (Gallant) Porier. The paternal grandfather, Cyrel Gallant, of Abram's Village, was the first settler in Eg- mont Bay, having come from Malpeque , his native place. He married Mardes Arse- nault. The subject of this sketch was reared under the parental roof and received his education in the neighbourhood schools. He was reared to the life of a farmer and has followed agricultural pursuits during his active years. In 1903 he bought the "Red Cliff " farm of two hundred and twenty-five acres and on which is a splendid fourteen room house and three large and conve¬ nient barns. These were built by the late Pierce Doyle and altogether this is consid¬ ered the best farm in Prince county, if not in the province. Mr. Gallant also owns a farm of one hundred acres at Abram's Vil¬ lage all of which is under cultivation and highly productive. He is practical and pro¬ gressive in his methods and stands as a leader among his fellow agriculturists. In politics Mr. Gallant supports the Liberal party and takes an active interest in public affairs, having been poll clerk at elections. He is a member of the Catholic Mutual Benefit Association, of which he has served as assistant recorder and secretary. He married Miss Priscilla Gallant , a daughter of John P. Gallant , of St. Anthony , Prince Edward Island , and to them have been born the following children : Alma, Selina, Angeline, Anthony and Henry. The members of the family move in the best social circles of the community and are held in high esteem by all who know them. F. T. Arsenault , who occupies a lead¬ ing position as a successful merchant and enterprising citizen of Wellington, Prince county, is a native of this locality, where he was reared and educated. He is a son of Thomas and Madeline (Arsenault) Arse¬ nault, the former of whom was a successful farmer in Lot 16 , while his wife was a daughter of Fidele Arsenault , of Lot 15. The subject is well conneqted in family rela¬ tions, being a nephew of Senator Arsenault , a successful merchant and farmer, and who also long occupied a prominent position in public affairs. He was a member of the local Legislature for twenty-seven years, having never been defeated at the polls, and was then appointed to the Dominion Senate by Sir John Thompson in 1895, serving two years, his death occurring in 1897.
