GUSTAVUS MCGRATH, who operates a fine farm in Lot I. Prince county, was born in this locality on January 28, 1872. a son of John and Catherine (Nelligan) McGrath. The father, who was a successful farmer during his active years, was also born in Lot I in 1827 and died there in1892. The paternal grandfather, James McGrath, was a native of County Wexford. Ireland, and came to Canada in about 1820, locating first in the province of Ontario and coming soon afterward to Prince Edward Island. where he subsequently followed the pursuit of farming. To the subject’s parents were born twelve children: James; Morris; John, deceased; Mary is a Sister to St. John in the convent at Charlottetown; Maggie is a Sister of the Resurrection at Quebec; Gus- tavus, subject of this sketch; Frank, is a successful physician at Bloomfield; Nellie is known as Sister Ufrida at Charlottetown; Antoinette lives at home: Annie L. lives at home and is engaged in teaching; Joseph P. is a student at McGill University at Mont- real, Canada; Ella M. is teaching school at Pinsville. this province. John McGrath was a staunch Conservative in politics and a faithful member of the Catholic church.
Gustavus McGrath was reared under the parental roof and secured his early education in the district schools. He was reared to the life of a farmer, to which calling he

has devoted his mature years. He is the owner of one hundred fifty acres of land in Lot 1, one hundred of which are under the plow, which, under his able management and strenuous efforts, have been rendered highly productive, returning abundant crops to the owner for the labour bestowed. Many of the improvements on this place were made by Mr. McGrath’s father and are of a per- manent and substantial character, the place being now maintained at the same high standard of excellence which characterized it under the father’s management. Mr. Mc- Grath also engages to some extent in dairy farming, sending milk to the cheese fac- tory. In politics Mr. McGrath renders an honest support to the Conservative party and takes an interest in all things affecting the local welfare.
WILLIAM CALLAGHAN, who stands high among his fellow citizens in Lot 2. Prince county, and who owns and operates a fine farm in that locality. was born in Char- lottetown, this province, on June 24, 1832, and is a son of Patrick and Maria (Peper- all) Callaghan, the father a native of Hali- fax, Nova Scotia, and the mother of Bris- tol, England. The paternal grandfather, Dennis Callaghan, was a native of County Wexford, Ireland. Patrick Callaghan came to Charlottetown in 1825 and here followed his trade, that of tinsmith, for a number of years, though later in life he turned his at- tention to agricultural pursuits, in which he was fairly successful. He was originally a Liberal in politics but subsequently aligned with the Conservative party. His religious faith was that of the Catholic church, while his wife was a member of the Church of
