The family are well known throughout the community and are highly respected by all. Albert W. Clements , well known as a successful farmer at South and who stands high as a public spirited and progressive citizen, was born at this place on February 3, 1862, is a son of William and Elizabeth (Machon) Clem¬ ents, the father born at Bristol , England , and the mother a native of Gurnsay Cove, Prince Edward Island . The father, who died in May, 1889, had been twice married, his first wife having died about 1855. He located in Prince Edward Island about 1825 and there successfully followed ship build¬ ing and the merchandise business. The subject of this sketch attended the common schools and was reared to the life of a farmer, to which he has adhered during the subsequent years. His place comprises one hundred acres, and is well improved with neat and substantial buildings. The farm reflects credit upon the owner be¬ cause of the advanced state of cultivation in which the fields are maintained and the abundant crops which are reaped therefrom. Mr. Clements began business on his own account here about 1883 and has since that time acquired an enviable reputation among his neighbours because of his staunch qualities and the public spirited atti¬ tude he maintains toward all matters affect¬ ing the general welfare. On November 11, 1885, he married Miss Jennie McLeod , a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Ross) McLeod, both natives of this Island, the wife of Vernon River , where she was born October 13, 1861. To their union have been born six children as follows: Roy L ., Eliza¬ beth W., Helen, Vernon, Cecilia and Gladys. The family are consistent members of the Methodist church and stand high in the best social circles, their home being the center of a gracious hospitality. Mrs. Clements ' fa¬ ther was long and successfully engaged in ship building. Lester Brehant , a successful physi¬ cian and surgeon and popular citizen of Murray River , Kings county, was born at South or White Sands on April 22, 1876, a son of George H. and Margaret (McKennan) Brehant , the for¬ mer a native of South, and the latter of Uigg , Prince Edward Is ¬ land. The father followed agricultural pur¬ suits. The paternal grandparents, Henry and Frances (Thorne) Brehant , were na¬ tives of the Isle of Guernsey , Scotland . Lester Brehant attended the district schools of his neighbourhood, supplement¬ ing this by a course of study in Prince of Wales College which he entered in 1892, and where he remained two years. In 1899 he attended Dalhousie Medical University, completing his four years' course in 1903 and receiving his degree of Doctor of Medi¬ cine. Immediately upon the conclusion of his technical studies he entered upon the active practice of his profession at Murray River and has here remained. He adds to a thorough knowledge of his profession a genial personality and a natural ability in the treatment of patients, so that he has been successful to a very gratifying degree.
