On April 30, 1890, he was married to Miss Annie MacGregor , a daughter of Archie and Sarah (Lund) McGregor, of Lot 6 5. They have seven children: Sarah Hildred , Everett, Harriet, Gertrude, Emer¬ son, James Edward , and Lena Catherine . John L. Hawkins , who is successfully engaged in the operation of a fine farm at South, was born at White Sands on November 6, 1839, and is a son of Giles and Harriet (LeLacheur) Hawkins, natives of , the father being of English ancestry and the mother of French. The mother came to Prince Edward Island in 1806 and his father in 1808. Giles Hawkins , the paternal grandfather, was a native of the Isle of Guernsey and came to Prince Edward Island in 1808. In his na¬ tive land he married Susanna Chessell , by whom he had eight children, five sons and three daughters. His father-in-law accom¬ panied him to the Island. Giles Hawkins settled at Murray River , where he engaged in farming and resided up to the time of his death, which occurred in the spring of 1839. His family all settled around him and have all passed away and are buried at Murray Harbour . To the subject's parents were born eight children, three sons and five daughters, of whom four, two sons and two daughters, are living. John L. Hawkins was educated in the district schools and has followed farming throughout his life, his place being now con¬ sidered one of the best improved and most productive homesteads in that part of the Island. Its present condition indicates the owner to be a man of thrift, energy and good judgment. Politically Mr. Hawkins is a staunch Conservative and has always taken a very active part in public affairs, and in religion the family are members of the Meth¬ odist church. He has twice married, his first wife, to whom he was married on January 16, 1865, was born at White Sands , July 11, 1837, and bore the maiden name of Maria Jane Brehant . To them were born three children, Elisha M., a contractor of New York , and Charlotte and Eliza M., both now living in Providence, Rhode Island . Their mother died August 7, 1874, and on March 15, 1879, Mr. Hawkins married Miss Hannah McNeill , born at Cavendish on Au¬ gust 19, 1846, a daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Poole) McNeill, and to them have been born four children: Maria J., John H., Ernest A., and Charles W., all of whom are at home, excepting one son, who is now in , Manitoba . The family are highly esteemed and are members of the leading so¬ cial circles of their community. John A. Hynes , a successful farmer and enterprising business man at Kensing¬ ton, Prince county, was born in Spring Val ¬ ley, Lot 18, Prince Edward Island , and is a son of Thomas and Catherine (Bowlin) Hynes. The father was born in County Tip- perary, Ireland, and came to Prince Edward Island when about twenty-five years old, locating on the farm in Lot 18, where he died in 1895, at the age of eighty-two years. The maternal grandfather, Michael Bow ¬ lin, came from County Waterland, Ireland, to Prince Edward Istand in 1830, and bought a farm on Darnley , Lot 18, where he lived until his death in 1878, at the age of seventy-three years.
