He came to Prince Edward Island on August 11, 1853, in the ship “Amity of Glasgow,” and located at Strath Alban where he followed farming all his life. He was married in his native coun- try and became the father of eight chil- dren: Archibald, Allen, John, Catherine, Mary, Flora, Margaret and Sarah. Archi- bald McKinnon, the subject’s father, was also born on the Isle of Mull and accom- panied his parents on their emigration to Prince Edward Island. Here he followed his trade, that of a tailor, for a great many years, but during the last twenty years of his life he was engaged principally in farm- ing. He married Isabella Ferguson, a daughter of Peter Ferguson, of Hampton, . this Island, and they had issue as follows: , Peter, who died in infancy; Neil; Charles; Peter (second); John Archibald; Malcolm ~ F.; Sarah, the wife of Charles McFadyen; Catherine, deceased; Christie; and Isabel, the wife of Duncan McGilloray. He was a member of the Church of Scotland, al- ways supported the Liberal party and his death occurred on May 26, 1891.
The subject of this sketch was educated
in the district schools and upon the comple- tion of the curriculum learned the trade of a tailor, in which he has since been engaged. He has a thorough knowledge of the details of the business and has been successful in a business way to a gratifying degree. com- manding his full share of the public patron- age. Fratemally he is a member of the L. O. A. B. A. and the Sons of Temperance. In politics he supports the Liberal party and religiously is a member of the Scotch Kirk. He is well known throughout the commu- nity and is well liked by all, standing well in both business and private life.
PAST AND PRESENT OF
JOHN ANDERSON, an expert accountant and highly esteemed citizen at Kensington, Prince county,was born at Newtown, Belfast district, Prince Edward Island, in February, 1856, and is a son of Alexander and Mary (Gillies) Anderson, the father a native of Dunstal’fnage, Queens county,and the mother of Isle of Skye, Inverness, Scotland. The father, who followed milling and farming during his active life, died in November, 1873. His wife is still living. The pater- nal grandfather, Alexander Anderson, was a native of Perthshire, Scotland,who came to Prince Edward Island in 1808 and here fol- lowed farming. His wife bore the maiden name of Isabella McDougal. The maternal grandparents, Alexander and Flora (Mc- Queen) Gillies, were natives of the Isle of Skye and came to Prince Edward Island in 1819. where the grandfather died on April 24, 1867, at the age of eighty-two years, his wife dying February 6, 1885. at the age of ninety-three years. The maternal great- grandmother bore the maiden name of Ann Nicholson and came to Prince Edward Is— land sometime subsequent to the emigration of her son. She died in February, 1845. at the age of eighty-four years.
John Anderson attended the district schools of his neighborhood, supplementing this training by attendance at Prince of Wales College. He then engaged in teach- ing school for about seven years, but relin- quished this and for a short time engaged in farming. In 1882 he began the mercantile business at Southport, but three years later removed to Kensington, where until 1896 he was engaged in the operation of a general store. Since relinquishing this business he has been engaged in various offices, being also employed as conveyancer, and holds commissions for taking acknowledgments of
