A story has been told of a large bull be— longing to Neil Stewart, walking leisurely home from his feeding place one evening, when a bear leaped on him from behind a tree. The bull ga110ped with the monster on his back for two or three hundred yards and when going down a steep hill back of Captain James Stewart's property, the bull fell. This gave the bear a chance to hold him down and kill him. One could see from the bull's tracks when the bear caught him and also where the bear was sticking his claws in the trees trying to hold the bull but couldn't until he fell. Another story has been told of two cows that were attacked and killed by a bear, within five yards of each other. A pen was built with an opening large enough for the bear to go through. Bait was placed inside with a string attached from it to the trigger of a gun set in direct line with the opening. When the bear entered and began to eat the bait, he caused the gun to discharge, and kill him. One day a farmer's pig wandered into the pen and met the same fate as bruin.
