Hon. Daniel J. MacDonald
Was born at South Lake, P.E.I. where he attended school. He served overseas with the P.E.I. Highlanders, then transferred to Cape Breton Highlanders. He was raised to the rank of Sergeant.
He returned from the Second World War and although handi— capped by the loss of a leg and an arm, he built a new home and farm buildings, doing much of the work himself, married the former Pauline Peters and carried on farming until he entered politics in 1962. They have a family of seven children.
In the 1962 Provincial General Election, Daniel J. MacDonald, Bothwell, contested the seat for Counsellor in the lst District of Kings and was elected on December 11th. He served in the Liberal Party until the next Provincial General Election on May 11th, 1966. Owing to the death of his fellow candidate, William Acorn, who passed away suddenly a few days previous to the General Election, it was necessary to defer the contest in the lst District of Kings until July 11th at which time the election was held. The seat of Government actually hinged on this deferred election, due to the fact, that on May 11th when the General Election was held, there were fifteen members elected on each side of the house which made it a tie.
The July 11th election was very vigorously contested by both parties and emerging victorious, were Daniel and his fellow
candidate, Hon. Bruce Stewart. The cabinet was formed on July 30, 1966.
Following the General Election, the Hon. Alex B. Campbell was called upon by the Lt. Gov. of the Province, Hon. W. J. MacDonald, to form a Government at which time Daniel was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. He served in this capacity until the next General Election in 1970 when he was again elected and the Campbell Government was returned to power winning 27 out of the 32 seats. When the Hon. Alex B. Campbell, Premier of the Province, was called upon to form his Government, Hon. D. J. MacDonald was again named to the Portfolio of Minister of Agri— culture and Forestry, a position which he still holds.
