Page 38 There was a fishing centre, as well, below Joshua MacDonald's (new George MacDonald's) and another at South Lake. The Government built a bridge and lane below the Ralph Robertson property. Foot bridges were built across the river. One was placed below James Robertson's by James Robertson and Seth MacLean. There was another below Josiah Stewart's now Maxwell Robertson's and a third below Clinton Stewart's. BASIN HEAD HARBOUR In 1937 work began at Basin Head, when the dredge, captained by Alexander MacLean, Fairview, came in through the east (Munn's) harbour, below Mossey's. The purpose of the dredging was to open a harbour at Basin Head and to close the east one, a iatural harbour. The water from South Lake and North River flowed out this harbout at one time. The work at Basin Head was completed in 1938. (It was dredged again in 1959). Percy Coffin hauled water for the dredge from a spring on the Clinton Stewart property. He encased it with a barrel or cask, and was able to take two punchions of water from it at one time. The work was done by a French Company. Men working here included: Mr. Gass, Quebec, contractor; James Whelan used dynamite for blasting rocks.
