EGG CIRCLE

The egg circle had its beginning in Charlottetown in 1913. It was organized in the eastern area in 1915 or 1916. The manager was George Leightizer, Charlottetown, followed by his son, James.

The last manager was Leonard MacDonald who wound up the business. John Hogan was candler.

Case Plan

The circle number was marked in the centre of the case plan and the patron's number would be marked according to the number of eggs shipped. They were hauled by horses and express wagons. The first wagons were covered by a canvas in order to keep the

sun from beating down on the eggs. Tenders were called for the haulers and the lowest tender was usually accepted.

The eggs were packed in cases and shipped to Charlottetown.

Each case would hold 30 dozen eggs and at that time nearly every farmer had some to sell.

After the closing of the circle, some eggs were shipped to New Brunswick and some were sold at the Co—Op store in Souris.

At the present time, very few people keep hens. Their eggs are sold in most cases, to regular customers.
