SEAL HUNT

In 1846, a seal hunt took place on drift ice that was carried in from the open sea by easterly wind. The ice had stranded between East Point and Red Point and in the spring morning (April) seals could easily be heard.

Many men headed quickly for the ice field to hunt the seals. They became so interested in their work, they did not notice that the wind had shifted and the tide had turned carrying the ice field with the hunters out to sea. Night was approaching,
