IRISH MOSS
Irish Moss is gathered from the shore at North Lake by people living in the area and also by some from outlying disrricts. It is taken home, spread out, and most of the dirt and kelp are
picked from it before it is delivered to the moss plant to be processed.
Before the new moss plant was built, a building was ,:L:ted for the purpose of buying dry moss only. It was then decided to build a plant so that wet moss could be taken care of. This plant was built in September 1967 by George Cheverie, a contractor, from South Lake. It was in operation in November of the same year. The plant is owned by P.E.I. Seaweed Canadian Company.
An addition was built to this plant in 1970 and another plant was built at Naufrage the same year. After the moss is processed, it is packed and trucked to Halifax from where it is shipped to Denmark to be used in medicine, cosmetics, and puddings.
