South Lake

South Lake was at first called Cross—Roads but the name was changed later to the present one because of the lake near the cross—roads.

When the early settlers came to the East Point area, Basin Head, West River (Kingsboro), North River (Bothwell) and Souin Lake were all connected and provided a way of travelling for Cher? were not any roads at this time. One could travel by water from Chings at Basin Head to what was then Lauchlan Camerons and Joe Gillis at East Point.

The boats they used were dug out canoes made from the lcrgest

trees they could find, these were also used for fishing. Later a harbour broke in South Lake and it was known as Fraser‘s Harbour. It was a fairly good boat harbour and fishermen used

to land their catch.

Some falls great quantities of mackerel were landed, dressed, salted, and packed at a stand on the north shore. The harbour, since this time, has moved west quite a distance and is now only a small stream.

At one time a bridge spanned South Lake. This was a great boom to the farmers. They hauled kelp from the seashore and spread it on their land to fertilize it. They also hauled seaweed
