Rum—Running Story

Rum—Running began in the days of the hungry 30's when there were no restrictions on St. Pierre. Liquor could be taken out of St. Pierre in vessels and transferred anywhere in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Northumberland Strait as long as they stayed outside the 12 mile limit.

Some people had money and could buy a keg; others, business men for example, wanted to make money so they would hire boats from different areas to go out to these vessels and bring back a load of liquor (rum, wine, whiskey and sometimes beer).

It was necessary for those men bringing in the liquor to act cautiously as the shores were well protected by officials who had the same power as the R.C.M.P. to seize the cargo.

The boat, Tena #11, was owned by two brothers who did some rum—running. The boat was able to carry liquor to the value of $2,000 per trip. Business men would buy the liquor for $25.00 per 5 gal. keg. Other vessels might lower their price to $20.00 per keg.

A local bootlegger sold it for $3.00 per 3 half—pint bottles. This could be bought anywhere on the north and south shores of Prince Edward Island.
