In recent years prizes in the J and P Coates competition were W: by ladies in our Institute namely: Mrs. Kenneth Cameron, Mrs. Roy Cu cliffe, Mrs. George Ceretti and Mrs. Alban Gaudet.

During the war years (1939—1945), war work was of first impor ance. To this end the Institute ladies spent much time in knitting tl needed articles, making children’s garments and baby layettes, and pat ing boxes of used clothing for overseas. Many quilts were made. It worthy of note that, on more than one occasion, as many as three (3) quil were made in one afternoon and evening. In 1943, thirty (30) quilts we completed. We tried to contribute to every appeal possible in connecti: with the war. The boys who served in the war were given a “welcon home” party and each was presented with a gift.

After World War I a monument was erected in the memory of ti ones who made the supreme sacrifice. Since World War II the Institt has had the name of one of our boys, who lost his life, inscribed on th monument. Each Remembrance Day a service is held at the monume‘ and a wreath placed on it.

Funds! Where did the money come from for all these deeds kindness? We all worked together, and, at times, worked hard. Ye. after year we had plays, ice—cream socials, Valentine and St. Patrit socials, suppers, teas, catered to Lodge banquets, card parties, crokinc parties, pantry and auction sales, films in the school at which we so lunches, candy, etc. For several years during the fifties we catered ' Holman’s picnic which was held at a beach in the district. More recent we have had a sale of home cooking and bazaar articles at the Crapa. Exhibition.

We are now attempting our district History, and would like to that all who are working at it, and helping to make it a success. This endeavc‘ is being undertaken in connection with the Centennial celebration to 1 held in Prince Edward Island in 1973.

It is our hope that, through the years, we have done much to bett the way of life not only in our own community, but also in other are we know not where. We trust that through our humble efforts some01 has been helped in his or her hour of need and distress. May the. tore which we have lit and carried thus far, be passed on to future genei tions.
