YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS

Youth organizations are an important part of the history of any community. Perhaps the one which involved more youngsters of school age was our Junior Red Cross, held in the school and organized with the help of the various teachers through the years. Many projects were undertaken and completed by the children such as portfolio exchange with other provinces or countries, making up health and school kits for the needy, and collecting toys for poor children at Christmas. They donated money to the March of Dimes, C.N.l.B. and other charities. In wartime, they made quilts and knitted articles. The Junior Red Cross in Belmont ended with the closing of our one room school in l972.

Another very active youth organization is our Lot l6 4-H, which includes members not only from Belmont but also from Central and Southwest Lot l6 and Miscouche.’ Members take up projects such as beef or dairy calf, sewing and knitting, forestry and also self determined projects. Meetings are held every month. Other activities are dancing, wiener roasts, skating parties, hockey, bowling, walkathons and dance-athons. Although, the club has adult leaders the officers are all young people. Other youth organizations in our district were the B.Y.P.U. and Mission Band. The B.Y.P.U. was organized in 1946 by Mrs. Winfield Gamble. This organization carried on till I950. Funds were raised by putting on plays, which were taken to different districts. Meetings were made interesting by a worship service, Bible quiz and a games period.

Mission Band was also Well attended. This was organized by Mrs. Alvin Yeo and held on Sunday evenims It consisted of a worship service and hymn sings, which were enjoyed by the youngsters.

in recent years, several boys and girls have attended Boy Scouts, Wolf Cubs and Brownies. These meetings were held in the old Parish Hall in Miscouche every week, under the direction of leaders from the

Miscouche area.

From all these different youth organizations,

our young people have gained experience in leader- ship and ability to mix and communicate with others,
