In 1882 the portion owned by James Higgins was deeded to his son, William who carried on farming operations here until November 17, 191^, when his son James took over. Adjoining this property, was 82 acres owned by Thomas Hodgson . This was sold in 1882 to Louis Yeo , who held it till 1903, when it was sold to William and James Higgins. Mr. Yeo moved from here to the property now owned by Robert MacLaurin and son. William Higgins had a family of four, three girls, Rebecca, Mary and Sadie and a boy, James. Rebecca married Chester Champion , Kensington ; Mary married Lemuel Silliphant , Hunter River , Sadie married Ezra Allen , Union Corner (now residing in Charlottetown ). The son, James married Lina Gorrill , of Northam and they have one son, Elton, who is now a doctor in Niagara, New York . James Higgins is still a resident of Belmont but in the winter months, resides in Florida . Mr. Higgins , in 1950, sold his farm to Ivan Clark , whose son, Edward now farms this property. In 1958, Edward married Ruby Best , Belmont, and they have a family of three daughters, Colleen, Catherine and Edith Lynne. Mr. Clark is a member of the Prince Edward Island Legislative Assembly, representing the of Prince since May 1970 in the present Liberal Government. One item of interest about this property that might be mentioned is that in 1922, Frank Clark , great uncle of the present owner was cutting wood on this property, and when he finished his task, he stuck the axe up in a tree to show how high the snow was that year. For fifty years the tree and axe remained there, until in 1972, it was blown down by a gale of wind. However, the complete axe, handle and all has been moved to the tree next to it, and who knows? Perhaps it will remain there for the next fifty years! STERLING THOMPSON In I876, William Thompson of Scotch descent 65
