CITY’S GROWTH

1497 Supposed discovery of P. E. Island by Cabot. 1534 The Island visited by Jacques Cartier. 1719 Port La Joie settled by the French.

1763 The Island ceded to Great Britain and placed under the Govern— ment of Nova Scotia.

1764 Captain Samuel Holland’s Survey began. 1765 Charlottetown designated as the Island’s Capital.

1767 The Island disposed of by lots.

1768 Walter Patterson appointed First Governor, he did not arrive until 1770.

1769 The Island becomes a separate colony.

1770 First Chief Justice sworn in.

1771 First Grand Jury assembled in Charlottetown. 1773 First Legislative Assembly met.

1775 Charlottetown looted by American Privateers and Philip Callbeck, Administrator, and Thomas Wright, Surveyor—General, taken prisoners.

1778 First barracks erected on east side of King and Queen Streets.

1780 School opened in the St. John’s Coffee House on Queen Street. An Act passed for establishing and regulating a Militia.

1787 The first newspaper “The Royal Gazette and Intelligencer" pub— lished.

1799 The Island received its present name. 1802 The first Post Office for the whole Island opened. 1823 Round lVIarket House opened on Queen Square.

1830 The first steamer to enter Charlottetown Harbour was a small one called the “Richard Smith” on August 10.

1831 The second steamer to arrive in Charlottetown was the “Royal William”. built in Montreal; she was later the first steamer in history to cross the Atlantic under her own power ( 1833).

1835 Government House completed. 1836 Central Academy opened.

1842 Original P. E. I. Steam Navigation Company formed in April, and first steamer owned by the Company was the “Saint George”, which arrived in August.

1847 Colonial Building opened. “The Examiner” first published.

1849 The Forty-niners. The brig Fanny sailed from Charlottetown and round “The Horn” for the California Gold Fields on 12th November.
