It was a common practice among the Greeks to loan money u-pon cargoes brought f1 om Foreign shores. If the Merchant Vessel returned safely, then the loan was repaid at an excessive rate of interest. If, however, misfortune overtook the Vessel and Port was never reached, the loan was not repaid. The Interest was the Premium and the

Loan was the face of *the Policy.

Although this plan lacked the machinery of the modern Insurance procedure, fundamentally it bears a kinship to Insurance as we know it, for it is a solution to the problem of making certain the uncertain. Although the principle of life insurance dates back to the days of man’s earliest existence it was practically unknown in Charlottetown in 1855. It was not until the latter part of the last Century that it became a recognized business in Prince Edward Island. .Many were the abuses and unethical practices in those early days and the high favor the business enj‘oys today in our Province and Canada generally is due, in no small measure, to Island Insurance men, led by J. O. Hyndman, C.L.U., who were instrumental in forming a Provincial Association of Life Insurance men fifty years ago and later promoted the idea of a Dominion Association.
