HARLOTTETOWN’S POLICE

1855 —1955

The Charlottetown City Police Force originated at a meeting of the City Council held on the 17th day of August, 1855, when it was resolved that there be six policemen ap- pointed, two to be attached to ward 4 and one to each of the other wards and that they be paid forty—five pounds per annum, they finding their own dress which was to consist of a uniform to be satisfactory to the Mayor and Council. The City, however, subsequently paid for their dress, and con— tinued to do so from time to time, to the extent of one suit

yearly and one overcoat every three years.

This procedure was subsequent to an Act of the General Assembly of Prince Edward Island passed on the 13th day of April, 1855. His Excellency Sir Domonick Day being then Lieutenant Governor, the Town and Common of Charlotte— town having a population of 6,500 persons was created a City by the name, style and title of Charlottetown.
