1948—The lives of two teen—age girls were lost in a fire on the night of

ganuary 18th which destroyed the home of l\lr. W. Larkin on King treet.

1950—Fire again claimed the life of a citizen in the person of Mrs. T. Keoughan when the Sporting Club on Grafton Street was com- pletely destroyed by fire on the night of February 15th. This fire threatened to engulf a whole city block but was confined to the main building by the efforts of the Volunteer Fire Department.

1951—During the night of August 18th fire completely destroyed Horne Motors Limited, Batt & MacRae Limited, The VVhelan Memorial Hall, F. R. MacLaine Ltd, and caused severe damage to other buildings in the block bounded by Grafton, Prince, Kent and Great George Streets.

1952—Severe damage was suffered by the large Harwood Apartment building on the North River Road on April 2nd.

The present fire department consists of 50 officers and men divided into a Hose Company of 20 men, a Hook and Ladder Company of 15 men, and Auxiliary Jire Corps of 10 men. The remaining 5 men are the Chief

and his Assistant and the three permanent pumper engineers and care— takers of the Station.
