The expenditure of the City School Board in 1878, the year after it was authorized in the School Act was $8,000.00, while this year ending 1954, it will be about $190,000.00.
Pupils attending the City Public Schools now number slightly over 2600 and are instructed in Grades 1 to 10. Those students continuing their education either write examinations for entrance to Prince of Wales College or those of the Atlantic Provinces Examining Board.
Pupils from the City Schools have in years past done well, and many of them brilliantly at Institutions of higher learning, and brought not only honour to themselves but to their native City, and it is hoped that improved conditions in school environment and in curricula will
enable those now attending the City schools to attain a wider vision of education and good citizenship.
