3 Reading this in 196l I wondered how in the world the essay got by the judges without having most of these statements scored out as erroneous. Such conditions 100 years ago seemed incredible. To correct or verify them, and to expand my early sketch I began searching the records, and reading every available scrap of Prince Edward Island history dealing with that period, particularly the history of education in this province, I perused among others :- Outline of History of Methodism in Prince Edward Island ; Many copies of "The Examiner" and "The Islander"; History of Education in Prince Edward Island - Dr. S. N. Robertson , 1907; The reports of School Visitors to the Board of Education; Extracts from minutes of School Board meetings - Major T. E. MacNutt j and of course, the history of Prince Edward Island in general. Believe it or not, I found evidence to support all statements made in the essay. Extravagant though they seemed, they were historically correct. I was describing the situation mildly. In fact, it was a masterpiece of understatement I In order to appreciate the initiative, vision and courage of the people who were inspired to erect this building, we need to know some¬ thing of the educational climate in Charlottetown at that time. So let us digress for a few moments, and arrange a setting, as it were, for the fascinating story of this school. I wish I had time to tell you the whole story of education in Prince Edward Island about a century ago. I am sure you would find it extremely interesting. Many statements made then remind one that
