20 In August, 189^-, the Secretary of the Board was instructed not to give permits to pupils for Prince Street School if they lived nearer to West Kent School. At this time there were 601 enrolled at Prince Street School and M+0 at West Kent School. Finally, in September, Ifcfc, boys above grade 2 were transferred to West Kent School. For years the boys were "channelled off" at various grade levels, and it was not until the school year 1936-37 ■ that boys finally reached grade 1C pgnin in Prince Street School. We lost them in the top grades for several years during and following World War II - but once again managed to hold them to grade 10 in the 19^9-50 term. In 1922 the Annex had been built, and provided ample accomodation fnr fup qnrvroTc'imnt'clv 50r" students registered that year* Over-' crowding occurred again following the last war, and by the early 1950's attendance rrm around 650. The opening of Queen Charlotte High School in 195*+ relieved the pressure. Here is a "pot pourri" from Major MacNutt 's "Extracts from Minutes of School Board Meetings, 1877-1937" which I think may interest you:- (1) School hours - On August 29, 1877, the Board ordered that schools ooen at 9:00 a.m. and close at 2*00 p.m. with two intermissions of 10 to 15 minutes each - -Infant pnd Primary Departments to close at 1:00 p.m. Every alternate Saturday was to be a holiday. It was not until May I,'. 1905, that the Board agreed schools should have two sessions - 9:00 to 12 i 00 and 1:30 to 3:00 o'clock - Primary Department to have no afternoon session, but Primary Teachers, to return to assist in afternoons.
