, The history of the Roman Catholic church in the area is quite giong, for as early as 1828 the Very Rev. James MacDonald, the ‘gfirst native son of P.E.I. ordained to the priesthood, purchased an gjacre of land in Park Corner, built a church and conducted a cem- Ftery there. Father MacDonald was residing in Indian River and "n this church he held a station twice a year. This was where the §Roman Catholics from this area attended services. In the year ;1865 the church was sold to a James Doyle who pulled it down nd built himself a home. This transaction closed the history of ‘1 he Irishtown Church and a new church was built at Summerfield. gBishop MacIntyre blessed the cornerstone October 25, 1865, and €the following August the church was opened and used. It was fiinally completed in 1870. This mission was served by the Parish g‘priests of Indian River until 1918.

1918 a resident pastor was appointed and the erection of a Parish . 'ectory was begun.
: In 1928 Rev. Francis MacDonald purchased two acres of land
Pom the MacKay family, moved the first church across the road 11d prepared the grounds for the erection of the present beautiful ‘ hurch. The corner stone was blessed by Bishop Li. J. O’Leary and he dedication November 27, 1929 by Msgr. J. C. MacLean. The hurch is 90 feet long, 40 feet wide and had a tower 65 feet high. x, here were 11 priests and two Christian Brothers born in this .glarlsh as well as 19 ladies who entered various religious orders. 1: he Catholic Women’s League of Canada was organized in 1939 ‘ I1d at the present time all ladies living in the parish are members. he Laymen’s Association was formed in 1965 and is designed to 2 'l‘lng the laymen into contact with their fellow Catholics of the ‘ locese under the direction of His Excellency the Bishop.
