with Margate . In 1962 the Women 's Missionary Society and the Women 's Association amalgamated and we had the inauguration of the United Church Women ( U.C.W .). The history of the Roman Catholic church in the area is quite long, for as early as 1828 the Very Rev. James MacDonald , the [first native son of P.E.I , ordained to the priesthood, purchased an acre of land in Park Corner , built a church and conducted a cem¬ etery there. Father MacDonald was residing in Indian River and ■in this church he held a station twice a year. This was where the Roman Catholics from this area attended services. In the year 1865 the church was sold to a James Doyle who pulled it down and built himself a home. This transaction closed the history of [the Irishtown Church and a new church was built at Summerfield . Bishop Maclntyre blessed the cornerstone October 25, 1865, and ■the following August the church was opened and used. It was ■finally completed in 1870. This mission was served by the Parish ■priests of Indian River until 1918. The following pastors had charge of Parish from 1865: Rev. James MacDonald 1865-1869; Rev. James McKenna 1869-1874; Rev. ■ Cornelius O'Brein 1874-1882; Rev. John Chaisson 1882-1889; Rev. ■ John A. MacDonald 1889-1890; Rev. F. X. Gallant 1890-; Msgr. | D. J. Gillis 1890-1918; Rev. John T . Murphy 1918-1919 (first resi¬ dent) ; Rev. Francis McQuaid 1919-1923; Rev. Francis MacDonald 1923-1936; Rev. Phalen McKenna 1936-1940; Rev. Eugene Mur- jray 1940-1961; Rev. Basil Croken 1961-1972. The parish established in 1865 was formed from portions of St . Mary's, Indian River , and St . Malachy's, Kinkora . In the year 1918 a resident pastor was appointed and the erection of a Parish rectory was begun. In 1928 Rev. Francis MacDonald purchased two acres of land from the MacKay family, moved the first church across the road and prepared the grounds for the erection of the present beautiful church. The corner stone was blessed by Bishop L. J. O'Leary and the dedication November 27, 1929 by Msgr. J. C. MacLean . The church is 90 feet long, 40 feet wide and had a tower 65 feet high. There were 11 priests and two Christian Brothers born in this parish as well as 19 ladies who entered various religious orders. The Catholic Women 's League of Canada was organized in 1939 and at the present time all ladies living in the parish are members. The Laymen's Association was formed in 1965 and is designed to bring the laymen into contact with their fellow Catholics of the diocese under the direction of His Excellency the Bishop, DIVISION OF THE SONS OF TEMPERANCE I A Clinton correspondent wrote in 1894 as follows: "We under¬ stand that a requisition, largely signed by the inhabitants of —27—
