WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Clinton Women’s Institute was organized on October 16, 1939, at the home of Mrs. Leslie Paynter, under the direction of Mirs Mary MacDonald, Supervisor of Women’s Institutes on P.E.I.

The first officers appointed were as follows: President Mrs. Charles Woodside; Vice—President - Mrs. George Riley; Secretary Treasurer - Miss Vivian Woodside.

Twenty—four joined as charter members.

Through the years we have worked for “Home and Country” and, although we have achieved a great deal, there is still mud to be accomplished. As we organized during the Second World War, we did a lot of knitting and sewing for the Red Cross, and packrd boxes for our soldiers overseas. We donated fourteen woollen blankets and a number of quilts and, over the years, we have em- tinued to knit and sew for the Red Cross.

We collected for all charitable organizations that asked for help from us, or donations were taken from our funds. Care par— cels were sent to foreign countries. Card parties, social evenings, suppers and food sales were held to increase our funds.

The W.I. renovated the community hall, had a kitchen built or]. bought a stove and kitchen utensils, chairs and folding tables, had a new floor laid and the building wired for electricity.

Through the years, the W.I. has taken a keen interest in tile affairs of the school, namely: the provision of school lunches needs for the children around the school, treats for the children at Christmas and at school closing. A furnace was installed in the school, a piano was bought, music lessons for the children spon- sored, and swimming classes also sponsored. A “Better Housing” competition was conducted in 1948 and Clinton W.I. won $25 with their entry.

A “Home Nursing” course was sponsored in 1962, and Mrs. Nina Brown instructed.

In the “Tweedsmuir Cup” contest in 1959-61, Clinton W.I. placed first for P.E.I.

In 1963 one of Clinton W.I.’s members hooked twenty-eightt

chair seats for the dining room chairs in Government House and these Were presented in 1964 by the Prince Edward Island. Want
