WOMEN 'S INSTITUTE Clinton Women 's Institute was organized on October 16, 193D, at the home of Mrs. Leslie Paynter , under the direction of Miss Mary MacDonald, Supervisor of Women 's Institutes on P.E.I. The first officers appointed were as follows: President - Mrs. Charles Woodside; Vice-President - Mrs. George Riley ; Secretaiy Treasurer - Miss Vivian Woodside . Twenty-four joined as charter members. Through the years we have worked for "Home and Country" and, although we have achieved a great deal, there is still much to be accomplished. As we organized during the Second World War, we did a lot of knitting and sewing for the , and pack( d boxes for our soldiers overseas. We donated fourteen woolkn blankets and a number of quilts and, over the years, we have con¬ tinued to knit and sew for the . We collected for all charitable organizations that asked for help from us, or donations were taken from our funds. Care par¬ cels were sent to foreign countries. Card parties, social evenings, suppers and food sales were held to increase our funds. The W.I . renovated the community hall, had a kitchen built on, bought a stove and kitchen utensils, chairs and folding tables, h.-td a new floor laid and the building wired for electricity. Through the years, the W.I . has taken a keen interest in the affairs of the school, namely: the provision of school lunches, needs for the children around the school, treats for the children at Christmas and at school closing. A furnace was installed in the school, a piano was bought, music lessons for the children spon¬ sored, and swimming classes also sponsored. A "Better Housing" competition was conducted in 1948 and Clinton W.I . won $25 with their entry. A ''Home Nursing" course was sponsored in 1962, and Mrs. Nina Brown instructed. In the "Tweedsmuir Cup" contest in 1959-61, Clinton W.I placed first for In 1963 one of Clinton W.I .'s members hooked twenty-eigW chair seats for the dining room chairs in Government House arid these were presented in 1964 by the Prince Edward Island Wdrfl- —30—
