:We had scarcely found our wings, following our organizations, .. when the Hall project was launched, as told elsewhere in this book. As ‘rsoon as there was a roof over our heads in the summer of 1928, we began to use the Hall for Ice-Cream socials and every kind of entertainment .possible. In that year, we added $500. to the Hall funds.
, . Looking back we feel now, that even the cows felt the community urge and did their best to produce extra cream to meet the constant
. demand.
We accepted our share of responsibility in paying for the Hall, and. :during the depression years it was. a discouraging project. Suppers, plays, concerts, parties —— were repeated over and over, until we had con- ,tributed well over $2, 000, apart from the curtain and piano which we provided. ., . _, 7
,. The Institute Room is our own property, well equipped for every use, and our meeting place. We have had it remodelled and re-decorated
and it is a great aSset to the Hall.
We take our Hall and Institute Room for granted, but we might pause — say once a year, in March — and pat ourselves on the back for our share in it. Perhaps we didn’t put “the bull over the bridge,’ but we
did give him a mighty pgood Show. With this project behind us, weturned our interest to other things.
We helped to provide music in the School for several years, and participated' 1n the South Shore and Charlottetown Music Festivals. Many promising young voices were discovered.
We made generous donations to the Library.
. In all cases of need or mishap during the years, our Institute has organized help, and given generously of work and funds.
Red Cross work has always been carried on, and during the Second World War, boxes were sent to all the boys in the service.
In 1953, we celebrated our twenty—fifth Anniversary with a banquet, in the Hall. We paid honor then, as always, to those members who had'. been called beyond. To commemorate this occasion the younger members. presented a W. I. Pin to each of the seven Charter Members mentioned, above.
The new Rink in Crapaud was opened in 1954, and our Institute carried on the Canteen service for its benefit. The sum of over $1,600,. our profit, was turned into the Rink treasury last year. We are providing“
the same service this year.
The Women’s Institute is being recognized more and more as the. representative body of responsible women in the community, and we find. our work changing each year.
We have sponsored the Dental Clinics, the Water Safety Courses,
the Blood Donor Clinics, and the Red Cross Convenor has kept on hand Vitamin Capsules for children, at small cost. Red Cross work has also-
been kept up.
All these activities mean considerable'work, but we are happy to- promote them, knowing that their full value stretches into the future,
“for years beyond our our ken.”
Members serving as President during the years have been: Mrs- Harry Leard, Miss Mary Newson, Miss Lolita McVittie, Mrs. Nina May-- nard, Mrs. Malcolm MacKenzie, Mrs. Joseph Trowsdale, Mrs. Eric Lowther,.
