ST. JOHN’S W.A.

St. John’s Branch of the Woman’s Auxiliary was organized at The Rectory on January 22, 1907, during the incumbency of Rev. J. W. God- frey, with a membership of fifteen. Mrs. C. E. Lowther was our first President, and proved a very efficient leader. Mrs. Robert Moore was appointed Vice-President, and those of us who were acquainted with her have a clear recollection of her quiet manner and her devotion to her work. Mrs. Robert Rogerson was Dorcas President, an office for which she was fully qualified. Our meetings were enlivened by her presence; her jovial disposition and her kind manner endearing her to all with whom she came in contact. Miss Hattie Moore was appointed Secretary-Treasurer, but in March of that year, she went to Western Canada, and Lizzie MacKinnon

was appointed to fill the vacancy.

Our devotional meetings were held on the first Tuesday of each month, and sewing meetings each week, on Tuesday afternoon. Plans were made for holding a Bazaar, and this, in connection with a supper, has, with few exceptions, been an annual event.

In addition to our Missionary apportionment, the W. A. has made contributions to various parochial and Diocesan needs, such as :— Sunday School by Radio; purchasing Hymn Books for the Church, repairing Altar Frontals; etc. as well as attending to various improvements and altera-

tions in the Rectory.

From 1913 1918, our W. A. did not function regularly, but in March 1919, we were re- organized, and have carried on ever since.

In 1919, ’20, and ’22, bales of clothing were sent to an Indian Residential School in Le Pas, Man., and since 1939, the W. A. has annually provided clothing for Indian Schools. Overseas parcels have also been sent and Social Service work done.

In 1921, an Honor Roll, in memory of adherents of St. John’s Church who had served in World War I, was procured and placed in the Church, the lettering being Old English script, done by Mr. H. P. Bernas- coni, Quebec; and in August 1946, a second Honor Roll for those who had served in World War II was procured, the lettering being done by Mrs. Charles Bentley, Charlottetown, and later added to by Mrs. Ina

Hickox. In 1925, a Burse and Veil, and Communion Linen was purchased,

and in the same year a Brass Memorial Tablet, in memory of the Countess of Westmoreland and her daughter, the Lady Cecily Jane Georgiana Fane, was also placed in the Church.

At present, we have thirty members, four of whom have had Life Membership conferred upon them: Mrs. F. W. Wrixon, wife of the Rector of the Parish, and Lizzie MacKinnon in 1921; and Mrs. J. Verner Moore and Mrs. Frank Myers in 1954.

For some years past, the World Day of Prayer has been observed, the Crapaud W. M. S. and the W. A. uniting on these occasions. The at-.
