whose exemplary zeal and judgment, at the head of those affairs which regard the relief and instruction of the poor, as well as her indefatigable exertions to promote the happiness of this improving Colony, command, at the same time, the admiration and esteem of all, and entitle her to the

highest degree of confidence and gratitude.”

Our next item of importance, dated, February 10, 1845, is as fol- lows:

“William Lowther, Yeoman, leased land to the Rev. John Herbert Read, Clerk, Rector of Saint John’s Church of Westmoreland, William Lowther and John Pearson, Church Wardens of said Church, and to the Rector and Church Wardens of the said Church of the time being, as a site for a schoolhouse in connection with the said Church, Saint John’s”.

The land is described as follows:— “Commencing on the road leading from Tryon River to Charlotte Town, through Westmoreland settlement. at the S.W. corner of land in the occupation of George Nichol- son, and running from there”., 29 ft., then N., 24 ft., then E., 29 ft., and then S., 24 ft., The lease is for nine hundred and seventy years from May 1, 1845.”

A school building was erected on this land, the contractors being Rogerson Bros. This school also served as a day school for a number of

years. Early school buildings were entirely different from those of the

present day. At first they were built of logs, the openings being filled with mud and moss to keep out the cold. Generally, there was one or two small windows. Later, frame buildings were erected, the above men- tioned school being of this construction. The “Master’s Desk” stood on a raised platform on one side of the room, the pupil’s desks being ranged around the wall. The pupils faced the walls for study and work, but stood in a class for recitation. Later, the desks were placed in rows, but the “Master’s Desk” still retained its place of honor on the dais. Lighting the fire was the duty of the first pupil who came to school in the morning. The schoolmaster and the schoolmistress were people of importance in the district, and were looked upon as leaders, being respected by all.

After a few years, when schools were graded, the Principal’s De- partment was designated “The Master’s End”, and the Primary Depart- ment, “The Missus’ End”. After a while this was known as “The Teach- er’s End,” but the Principal’s Department still retained its former pres- tige of “The Master’s End.”

The writer clearly remembers the searching and wondering ex- pression on the face of a small boy who came from an ungraded school to Crapaud School, rapped at the door of the Primary Department, and en- quired: “Is this the Master’s School?” Upon being shown the proper door to approach, he very decorously hung his cap on the peg, brushed his hair, opened the Master’s door, entered the room, and became enrolled as a pupil of; Crapaud School.

From the “First Report on the Glebe and School lands,” dated 1847,.we read:

“Disbursements on account of Glebe and School lands. October 1, 1844, Paid Rev. Mr. Read towards School at Crapaud £20, 0 s., 0 d., July 14, 1845, Paid Rev. Mr. Read for teacher for Crapaud £15, Os, 0d.
