" CANFIELD 'S STORE " In the year 1865, Henry Wadman bought land from William Daw ¬ son, and also a small lot from William Worth . On this he erected a store and dwelling house combined. His son, Oliver Benjamin , occupied the dwelling apartment. Business in the store was conducted, known as Henry Wadman and Son, and in the year 1881, Mr. Wadman assigned the property to his son Oliver, who thereafter conducted the business as well as becoming postmaster for the district. When fire destroyed the Reid property East of these premises in 1899, this store and dwelling house also burned. Oliver converted his warehouse into a store, in which he carried on a business, and in 1903, purchased the John Williams Tailor Shop for a warehouse. He did business here for a number of years, until becoming crippled; his daughter Winni- fred assumed her father's duties and conducted the store and Post Office until 1918. In 1919, Harry V. Norton , son-in-law of Robert Reid , did business on these premises and in 1931 purchased the property from Mr. Reid , who had bought it from the Wadmans on October 12, 1918. After Mr. Norton 's death in 1936, the business was carried on by his widow, Hazel V. Norton , under the name of H. V. Norton Estate. In 1939, Mrs. Norton sold the stock to her son, Robert, who took Arthur Johnston into partnership with him. Mrs. Norton reserved the property for herself. These men operated under the firm name of Norton and Johnston, antil 1941, when Robert sold his share to Robert N. Dawson , and the business was known as Dawson and Johnston. This partnership continued until 1943 when Dawson sold to his partner and A. A. Johnston conducted the business alone until his death in 1945. Mrs. Jessie Johnston , widow of A. A. Johnston , carried on until February 1947, when Parker Canfield purchased the stock, having bought the property from Mrs. Hazel (Norton) Court a month previously. Mr. Canfield has made many improvements in his property since purchasing it, and has an up-to-date establishment doing good business in this thriving community. He carries a full line of groceries, provisions and other staple products, as well as hardware and other goods usually found in a well equipped store. Associated with Parker in the business is his wife, who is book¬ keeper as well as clerk. Employed with them also is Hubert Harvey who has served there for nine years, also Marion Canfield, part-time clerk.
