CRAPAUD-VICTORIA BOARD OF TRADE
The Crapaud-Victoria Board of Trade had its beginning in the late winter and early spring of 1944. At that time several important projects were claiming the attention of our Government; two of which were important to Crapaud and this part of the Province. One was the Trans— Canada Highway —- the other was the idea of plowing snow off our country roads, in order that motor cars could be used throughout the year.
The folk interested from the villages of Crapaud, Victoria, and nearby communities met from time to time to discuss these proposals. They endeavored to think of ways to persuade our Government that this
part of the Island needed those very things, there being no railway or other means of transportation, except over clay roads. The meetings held would deal with many problems of common interest to the group, which
added a good deal of color to the gatherings.
About that time, Rev. G. 0. Wright, a Baptist minister, was sta- tioned at Tryon. Finding the meetings so interesting, and seeing a need for a strong organization, he suggested that a Board of Trade be organ- ized. In this way the group would have an official status, and could approach our governing bodies as such. Consequently, at a meeting held April 25, 1944, for this purpose, the following Officers were elected: Pre- sident, Brent Wood (Merchant) ; Vice-President, Rev. G. 0. Wright; Secretary, Spurgeon Clark (dealer); Treasurer, S. J. Dunsford (banker); Executive, Donald MacLeod (dealer), Eric Lowther (farmer), R. N. Dawson (trader).
Through the help and advice of R. S. Hinton, lawyer in Summerside, then Secretary of the Summerside Board of Trade, the Crapaud-Victorla group were able to make a fitting application to Ottawa for a Charter. This Charter was granted on the 3rd. day of July 1944. Thus, this group became an official Board of Trade and took its place beside the other Boards in the Province.
The first Board was made up of the following members: Rev. G. 0. Wright, Rev. G. R. Hartman, S. J. Dunsford, Rev. J. A. Jardine, Lloyd Rogerson, Brent Wood, Parker Canfield, Sterling Lord, Donald G. Mac- Leod, H. B. Wood, Kenneth Robblee, John L. Nicholson, Thomas H. Best, Eric Lowther, John Simmons, Charles Howatt, James Moore, Lewis Fran- cis, Ralph Myers, W. L. Caseley, Arthur P. Simmons, J. Verner Moore, Frank MacDonald, Frank S. Myers, Lewis Myers, Otto C. Johnson, Wilmot MacDonald, Erle Maynard, John Leard, P. G. MacEachern, Arthur John-
son, Robert Dawson.
