THE FIRST RINK IN CRAPAUD

There are citizens in Crapaud today, and in nearby districts, who skated in the first closed rink in Crapaud well over seventy years ago. Just how long it was carried on, we do not know. It was built on West- moreland Road, a short distance from “The Corner,” and down beside the

brook. Mrs. George Myers, Mr. Warren Simmons, and Mr. Albro Howatt,

Tryon, still remember the good times they had there, and the fine music furnished by Collett’s Band, a member of which was Joe Ince, then a teacher in Westmoreland School.

Hockey had not then come into its own, but speed skating provided competition. It is remembered that Albert Stordy was the champion “Speed Artist.” Three carnivals were held in the winter of 1884, the ac- counts of which have been found in an old scrapbook. The names of many of those in costume are familiar to us. Two were held in Victoria, and one

in Crapaud, the description of which is copied here.

CRAPAUD CARNIVAL 1884

The Carnival at Crapaud on Wednesday last was a decided success. A large number of spectators were present despite the bad condition of the roads. The Rink was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and Westmoreland’s Band furnished some choice selections of music. Con— sidering the short notice given, the managers are to be congratulated on the success of their first Carnival in the above Rink.

Below will be found a list of those taking part.
