INTRODUCTION

This. 1973, is the year of Prince Edward Island's Centennial - 100 years of official existence as a self-governing province. In light of History, this seems like yesterday, and it is.

However, if we are not allowed to glory in the early days before Con- federation as being part of our existence, we are permitted to feel proud of the advances made since then.

We are indebted to the pupils of Indian River School and their teacher of the year 1964 for compiling the first history of the early settlers of Indian River. In this year of 1973, the Women’s Institute of Indian River continued extensive research, particularly of families, and we have given an outline of people who lived here many years ago, also people to the present day, home and abroad.

Those who lived and worked almost beyond human endurance, in those days, rest from their labors in some nearby quiet hillside, in the old cemeteries near the scenes they loved so well. May the God who sustained them in their day, strengthen us, into whose hands has been placed this heritage.

The appreciation of the members is expressed to all who wrote their own family history; also to those who supplied pictures for this history and who helped in any way in the printing of this book.

Any errors and omissions are unintentional and regrettable.
