GILLIS
Mary Adeline Gillis married Joseph M. Gillis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Murdock Gillis of Clermont, P.E.l., whose parents immigrated from Scotland. Married in June, 1910, Mary and Joseph began the first four years of their married life in Saskatoon, Sask. where Joseph was employed as a carpen- ter, first class, then moved to Boston, Mass., where the next three years were spent following the same trade. Returning to Indian River in Sept., 1917, they bought the present farm from the late widow of Cornilius Mac- Lellan, he being the son of the late Angus and Mary Jane MacLellan. Joseph began fox farming before organizing to become a tiller of the soil and be- longed to the Fox Breeders Association, the name of his ranch being “The Criterion”, and in due time began farming the land. Eventually a small country store was set up within the home which carried on into the 20’s and 30’s.
There were nine children born of this marriage, namely: M. Beatrice born in Saskatoon, was deceased in Aug., 1931.
Stephen J. also born in Saskatoon, married Eileen Glover, daughter of Robert and Ada (Mulligan) Glover of Spring Valley, P.E.l. in 1949, now re- siding in Summerside, P.E.l. Of this union six children were born, Roberta (Mrs. Dale Crossman), Ronald, and Reginald (twins) Kevin, Beatrice and Allan.
Catherine C. (Kathleen) born in Indian River spent a number of years in Boston, Mass., returning to the old homestead in Indian River in 1966, where she now resides, has remained single. She is commonly known as “Neen” by all around, a name instituted by Florence when an infant, attempt— ing to repeat the name Kathleen.
Bernard D. was born in Boston, Mass. and married Elizabeth Young in 1942, daughter of John J. and Margaret (MacDonald) Young of Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, where they reside. Of this union seven children were born, Urban, Reginal, who died in infancy, Arlene (Mrs. John Lyle), Kath- leen (Mrs. Donald Harris), Bernard A., Margaret, John J. and William.
Camillus born in Indian River, married Lorena MacLellan, daughter of Charles and Mary (Hynes) MacLellan of Spring Valley, P.E.I. in 1948. They have fiVe children, namely: Mary (Mrs. William Farris), Marlene, Joe, Kathy, Robbie, all residing in Travellers Rest.
Fredrick was born in Indian River and except for a few years with the R.C.A.F. during World War Two, resided at the home place and was engaged
in farming. He had the misfortune of losing his left arm in 1946 in a high- way accident, later in an accidental fall was suddenly deceased in Oct., 1970.
Edward J. also born in Indian River, married Eileen MacDonald, daughter of John (Jack Pius) and Jeanette A. (Boyd) MacDonald of Mount Stewart, P.E.I. in 1948, and have continuously resided in Charlottetown. Of this union there are four children, Margo (Mrs. Darryle Guignion), Edward (Eddie), a recent graduate of R.C.M.P., stationed in Toronto. Geraldine and Christine.
