MacLELLANS

About the year 1787, John MacLelIan, with his wife and family, came to Prince Edward Island from South Uist, Scotland. Arriving in Charlotte- town, they were met by Colonel Stewart who was then part proprietor of Lot 18. Colonel Stewart advised them to settle on his estate, telling them that at or near the mouth of Indian River they would find a French house. They did as he advised, travelling up the East River as far as Scotchfort, crossed to Tracadie Bay where they engaged a French schooner to take them to Malpeque. At Malpeque, they borrowed canoes to take them and their effects to Indian River, their future home. Their plans had been to go to Ontario, but, because of an epidemic of smallpox in that pr0vince, they changed theirplans, and so Ontario’s loss was Prince Edward Island’s gain.

John‘s wife was Catherine MacPhee of South Uist, Scotland. Their family consisted of one daughter and seven sons. The sons were: Donald, Angus, Archibald, Alexander, Roderick, Philip and James.
