THE SEA GULL Wild and free the sea gull wings his way Across the gloomy skies . . . A flash of white against the leaden grey, As on he swiftly flies. Oh, born and bred near the sea is he, And his tiny heart is brave, As the hearts of all true seamen be Who sail o'er the mighty wave. His helpless feet folded under him, He travels on through space, But his wings are strong enough and trim To carry him any place. The sky and sea are his playgrounds wide. He may coast along the breeze, Or down to the waves in a swooping glide He settles and rides at ease. Just a little ship with sails furled tight As the waters around him curl; Yet ready at any moment's fright, Those wings will quickly unfurl. So dauntless and free and glad is he; I know not of anything More graceful or lovely or brave to see Than a sea gull on the wing. 81
