In 1952 Miss El lie Gill is was appointed Provincial Secretary, this position she held for two years. Down through the years the program of the Catholic Woman's League has changed to a more universal participation. They now assist with support to Latin America and other underdeveloped countries. DRAMA CLUB In 1930 the Parish Priest, Rev. Reginald MacDonald , organ¬ ized Indian River Dramatic Club. It was a winter of many snows so rehearsals began after Easter, and the first three-act play to be presented was "Apple Blossom Time", and was presented in the Church Hall (now the Community Center) about May the 15th, with Father Reggie as Director . Those taking parts were: Bernard MacLellan , Catherine MacDonald , Hilda Ramsay , Hazelton Gill is, Selina Currie , Patricia Cullen , Joseph M. GiIIis , Margaruite Higgins (Peggy) Allie MacNeill , George Higgins , Douglas Campbell, and Maurice Higgins . Other plays presented were: Dust of the Earth, Lighthouse Nan, Lena Rivers , Cranberry Corners. Members of the casts included Grace Easter , Irene Higgins , Irene Cameron , Vangie Greenan, Peter MacLellan , Ronald MacLellan , Lucille McQuaid , Thelma Cameron , Margaret and Ken MacLean. Many invitations were received to present the plays in other halls and the cast travelled all across the Island. It became the custom to put on a play at St. Patrick's time, March 17th, and each year this was done down through the years. Father Reggie went overseas, having enlisted in the Army, and served as Captain for four years. Father Trainor was then acting as Parish Priest and the plays con¬ tinued under his direction. Father Louis Callaghan was the next Priest and he continued having plays every St. Patrick's. Each May a Drama Festival was held in Charlottetown . Enteries came from all across the Island, including Summerside and town. Indian River Club entered many times and for a number of years took first honors for their plays. In 1960 "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" was presented in the Festival, directed by Mrs. Leslie Ramsay . This won a trophy for the best three-act play in the Festival. Mrs. Ramsay also won the trophy for the best Director in that Festival. In 1947 Mrs. Ramsay received the ( C. D. A .) Canadian Award as recognition for development and service to drama. She served two years as President of the Provincial Drama Association. Plays directed by Father Callaghan were: "The Family Doctor", "Come out of the Kitchen". This is only naming a few. There were Actresses such as Donalda MacDonald , Helen MacDonald , Kay MacLellan , Mary Cameron , Agatha MacLellan , Mabel Sinnott , Elmer Power , Reggie Pendergast , Gerald Glover , Roddie Cameron, John Cameron , Anna Hum- phery, Annitte Arsenault, John Arsenault , Joseph MacDonald , Allan MacLel ¬ lan, Andy Turner , Tom Turner . 88
