HOCKEY
In the year 1931 the first organized Hockey Team was named “Indian River Rovers”. Leslie G. Ramsay was manager, and the late Sydney Heck- bert was the coach. Their colors were Red, White, and Blue and they played their games in Kensington Rink, and were members of the North Shore
Hockey League. They played for a trophy donated by the late Hon. C. Baker.
A few winters before, a team played (though not organized). This team was called the “Rovers”. They played their games at Tuplins Mill pond, and at Mills Point. This team had players such as - Charlie Tuplin, Norman Ramsay, Philip Crozier, Ruben Heckbert, Frank Craig, Keith Mann, Roy Easter, Robert Craig, Elmer Mann, George Murphy, Harry Easter, and the Mills’ boys.
Later in the Thirties, a team with Hazelton (Dinty) Gillis as Coach, and Harry Easter as Captain, played in the North Shore League. This team won the A. E. MacLean Trophy three years in succession. Harry Easter was awarded a medal inscribed ”For Best Defence Man” — 1934 & 35.
When 1940 came it saw many of the boys go to fight for King & Country, and the team broke up.
In the year 1973 under the Community Gardens Minor Hockey pro— gram, lndian River was represented by Michael Ramsay, playing with the “Newcomers”. Glennon MacLellan and Kenneth Mann played with the “Gulf Oilers”. The younger boys representing Indian River played in school teams. .

On Friday night, Feb. 2, at Kensington Rink, the “New Annan Stars” sprung a big surprise by winning over the hitherto unbeaten “Indian River Rovers” in a very close hard game. The lone tally by New Annan was a reward for persistent aggressiveness. The ice was soft, which militated to the disadvantage of the speedy “Rovers”. The five McKay brothers of the New Annan team certainly put some foot pounds of energy in the game - being “dead on” the disc almost continuously. - By the way, those Columbia University “Technocrats”, in nation-wide energy survey, would require to use some hitherto unheard of calculus to figure the correct number of foot pounds of energy used in one of those games. The game was refereed by
Orville Darrach.
