Another note of interest is, that at the request of the Trustee Board, the Masonic Grand Lodge of P.E.I., laid the corner stone of the church on Monday, June 27th, 1898.

On Sunday morning October 9th, 1898, Margate Church was dedi- cated to the Glory of God. Rev. Dr. Ralph Brecken, President of the P.E.I. Conference; Rev. F. A. Wightman, Pastor of Margate Circuit: and Rev. J. Heaney conducted the impressive service. Presentation of the church to the conference was made on behalf of the Trustee Board by Mr. Robert Heaney. Mr. H. R. Baker, Secretary—treasurer read an encourag— ing financial statement to the assembled congregation. At the time of dedication there was an indebtedness of only $325.00.

Dr. Brecken’s text was Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength, they shall mount up with Wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary and they shall walk and not faint.”

Rev. Charles MacKay, Presbyterian Minister of Long River, preached in the afternoon on 1 Chronicles 16:29. The evening sermon was delivered by Rev. Dr. Sprague of Summerside. Dr. Sprague’s text was Micah 6:8. Total offerings for the day amounted to $130.00.

When the church was built the ladies of the congregation furnished the interior.

The Sunday School donated the Communion Table. Lamps were donated by Mrs. Wm. Dennis, Sr.; Mrs. John A. Woodside; Mrs. Samuel Caseley; Mrs. H. R. Baker; Mrs. Jacob Fyfe; and Mr. Wm. Woodside. An eight-Day Clock was very generously donated in 1899 by Messrs. Godkin Bros, jewellers of Summerside.

Other furnishings were apparently donated but the list of them is incomplete.

The building committee was: Robert Heaney (chairman), James Pickering Sr.; William Dennis; Hiram D. Thompson and J. Pickering Jr.

In 1924 the appointments were Margate, Kensington and Freetown.

When church Union took place in 1925 another shuffle resulted and the appointments became Margate, Long River and New London.

On November 23rd, 1958, Margate congregation celebrated the One Hundredth Anniversary of Margate as the head of an established circuit, and the Sixtieth Anniversary of the present Church building. Special Services were held at 11 am. and 7.30 pm. The sermons were preached by Rev. W. S. Godfrey D.D. (Sup’t Home Missions, Maritime

Conference) .

Memorial Gifts were presented to the church at the evening serv- ice. Choir Lights In memory of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Mayhew. Donated by their family. Pulpit Scarf and Book Mark In memory of Mr. and Mrs. James Pickering Jr. donated by son, Wilfred Pickering.

Around 1959 the church Vestry was too small for Sunday School Classes, so a ceiling was installed and classrooms made up above. A choir room was built across the back. At this time two new windows replaced a round stained glass window in the vestry end of the church. Two oil

stoves were put in for heating the vestry part. 16
