ROADS
. A writer tells of the Island roads in the 1820’s. “Many roads in their meandering from one settlement to another, passed through miles of forest wilderness, without a house to shelter or refresh the traveller.”
The roads were narrow, rough and in the low-lying areas or
swampy places, poles were placed across the roads, then covered with clay and sods.
In later years the roads were built up with shale, and some were gravelled. To get them smooth after the winter and spring were over, the
