One of Margate’s daughters, Miss Barbara Woodside was crowned Queen of Summer-side High for 1953-54. In 1953 she was crowned Queen of the Maritime winter fair, then held in Amherst, Nova Scotia. In 1954 Barbara was awarded and presented with the Jubilee Endowment Schol- arship of $100.00, awarded annually by the P.E.I. Women’s Institute to’ any rural student advancing towards a degree in Home Economics. She was sponsored by Margate Women’s Institute and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Woodside.
In 1967 Margate W.I. sponsored Mrs. Isabell Picketts in the Cen- tennial Queen Contest and she was chosen as Princess. In 1967 the Ken— sington Area Centennial Project was the Community Gardens Rink with artificial ice. The Margate Women’s Institute gave its bit toward same. Margate’s Eric J essome and John Picketts have worked in the rink since it’s beginning, Eric as Manager and John as Ice Plant Manager.
Annually in August there has been a Harvest Festival which con- tinues for several days. Margate W. I. sponsors a booth each year for a day, where home cooking is sold. All Institutes of the surrounding dist-
ricts have one booth where together they display handicraft and some articles are for sale.
Each year there is great interest shown in the Miss Community Gardens Pageant. In 1968 our Leta MacLeod was chosen queen.
During the Autumn and Winter months our members and their husbands do their share as volunteers in the Gardens canteen and ticket offices. '
Another of Margate’s daughters, Louise Johnson Marchbank, now of Traveller’s Rest has done much for her province, having been Convenor of Agriculture with the WI, Provincial Board for a number of years, then Provincial President and Executive member of F.W.I.C. Mrs. Marchbank has worked untiringly, giving much of time and effort with the interests of P.E.I. W.I. at heart for “Home and Country”. Louise is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Johnson.
In 1970 Margate W.I. conferred it’s first Life Memberships on two of her members, namely, Mrs. (Chester) Elsie Mayhew Howard and Mrs.
(}I;Ieath) Marion Caseley Mayhew. They were both charter members of t eW.I.
