Daniel Mullen
The death of Daniel Mullen, one of the Province's best known craftsmen, occurred on April 14, 1974. Born in Frenchfort on November 4, 1904, the son of Edward and Jane Mullen, he, after attending Prince of Wales College, taught school at Ten Mile House. In the mid-twenties he moved to Boston where he worked in a cabinet-making factory, manu— facturing clock cases. He also studied drafting and mechanical engineer- ing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He returned to the Island in 1937 and opened a garage and auto-sales agency at Mount Stewart, which business he discontinued in 1961 when he was appointed teacher of Industrial Arts at Birchwood High School, Charlottetown. Very active in community affairs, he nonetheless found time to keep up his interest in carving, and he won prizes every time he entered his pieces in the Provincial Handcraft Competition. One of his last major works was a magnificent cherry wood bust of Sir John A. MacDonald.
