After some twenty-odd years the present church was built a mile further inland. Although the exact date is not known, 1837 - a date carved on one of the old sills - is believed to be the year the church was built. ■ ■ The first resident Presbyterian minister in P. E. I ., Mr. Urquhart , lived in Malpeque from 1800 to 1802. The presbytery officially organ¬ ized the first Presbytery charge at Covehead , St. Peters and Fortune in 1806. Rev. Peter Gordon , the next minister, was the first to be ordained and inducted on the Island. Dr. MacGregor , who last visited this district in 1802, assisted in the induction of Rev. Peter Gordon into this Pastoral charge in 1806. The ministry was of short duration due to ill-health. On Oct. 1, 1811, Edward Pidgeon , grandfather of Dr. George C . Pidgeon* was inducted. At the time of the induction of Rev. Robert Douglas , Oct. 1821, the first Presbytery of P. E. I . was constituted according to the Deed of Synod. During the Rev. Dr. Douglas ' ministry, the congregation in¬ creased so that it was necessary to make two charges - one at West St. Peters and Covehead and the other at East St. Peters and Bay Fortune . In 1846, when the Rev. James Allan was ordained and inducted, Covehead separated from St. Peters leaving Mr. Allan in charge of Covehead . Allan retired in 1890 after a ministry of forty-four years. * Dr. George C . Pidgeon was the first Moderator of the United Church ':'■'■':■:•.■■■-/'-' -; ■'.-, ■■ ' ■ ■ ' ■■' ■. ■ : 38
