VOYAGE OF THE FANNY
During the year 1849, "gold fever" struck across North America as stories of the strikes in California were circulated by relatives and friends. Reports reached Prince Edward Island concerning the
fantastic opportunities to "get rich quick" in California.
A group was formed in Charlottetown and they purchased the brig Fanny. After many hardships and adventures, the brig reached
California around Cape Horne. The following account of Voyage
of Brig Fanny From Charlottetown to San Francisco in 1849.$o 1850 by the late Stephen MacCallum and printed in the Weekly Patriot Sept.
8, 1892 records the following:
"The officers and crew were as follows: _ Capt. Irving, First—mate Smith (an old experienced seamen), Second- mate Fred Compton (A very smart seamen), McKay and two MacRae's (able—bodied seamen), Duncan McGougan and John Sinclair. We had on board in all fifty men and one dog and as most of us had either gun or pistol and plenty of ammunition, we were not to be scared by everything
that floated around us."
