Many interesting stories develop in any rural area. The Stanhope — Covehead - Brackley area is no exception. Many cf
the old stories have been lost but a few are recorded here.
At one time, a ghost was heard in the area of Stanhope Corner, The cries had terrified all the local citizens of the area. One evening, the proprietor of Point Pleasant Hotel was coming from Charlottetown on a two-wheeled car. The cries of the ghost resounded through the air. Mr. MacMillan calmly stopped the car, picked up the horse whip, and walked into the swamp. After an application of the horse whip upon a young neighbour lad,
the cries were never heard again.
The story is also told that one of the flacMillan gentleman who owned land in both Stanhope and Brackley had a novel way of crossing Covehead Bay. He had a molasses cask cut in two pieces. He took his horse to the water's edge, got into the half-cask,
and held the horse's tail while making him swim across the
harbour.
