FAMILY OF WILLIAM DOUGLAS, ESQUIRE

William Douglas, a native of Dumfries, Scotland, was born around 1750 and came to Prince Edward Island in 1772, at the age of 22 years. He married, about 1779, Catherine (Kitty) Millar, daughter of John Miller of Covehead, Lot 34, who came on the "Falmouth" in 1770. William Douglas acquired a large block of land in Lot 38, where he engaged in farming and stock-raising, and was also agent for Cambridge estate for many years. He was a magistrate and was noted for his energy and common sense. He died at his estate 'therry Hill", in Lot

38, in 1835, aged 85 years. The will of "William Douglas the Elder of

the Head of Hillsborough River in Prince Edward Island, Esquire”, was

dated 17 June 1834 and proved 20 Feb. 1835. It mentions all his ten

children but not his wife, who was probably dead.
