" SAM HILL" POEMS In the early years of the twentieth century, a local poet wrote of the folks of the Stanhope and Covehead area under the pen name ", ". These poems typical of small rural areas, were published in the local paper and sparked considerable contro- versary. To this day, none of the surviving families will claim relationship to the poet. Each claim swears that the poet belongs to another branch of the family tree. The poems are quite humorous in places and give an excellent portrayal of rural life of a few years ago on P. E. I. It is my sincere hope that no one will take offence to the publication of these poems which illustrate local community life. The six poems, included here, are representative of the poet's wit and satire. A short interpretation of names and events follows the poems. • i ' ,y- 126
