AN APPRECIATION
Kind friends, I thank you for the praise My verses have received That my poor words such feelings stirred
I would not have believed.
But that which please best of all - (who ever would have thought it?) My friend the miller18 cuts them out
And keeps them in his pocket.
I called one day to get a grist - (As sure as fate I mean it) He drew "My Neighbours" from his vest
And asked if I had seen it.
I guessed I blushed a little bit, Of course, he didn't know it, I read aloud and he explained
And boosted Sam the poet.
And I replied - beneath my breath And not in conversation - Old pal, I do appreciate
Your kind appreciation.
